WHAT IS YOUR HEALTH GOAL?

I’ve had high blood pressure for about 10 years. But, in 2017, my doctor told me I had high cholesterol and was prediabetic too.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST MOTIVATION?

An immediate family member had multiple stents and open heart surgeries. Another close family member is diabetic and on several medications for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Seeing my family live through this is my real motivation to change.

In early 2018, I had health screenings done through my employer and all of my measures were still high. I had an annual doctor’s appointment coming up and I hadn’t done anything about improving my health for over a year. I didn’t want to go in there one more time and be told that I had high anything. So, I became motivated to make the changes that I had wanted to make for a while and enrolled in Better.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED?

Like a lot of people, when I get stressed, I snack on chips and other junk food. So I try not to have that stuff in my house. If I buy it for guests or a special occasion, I get rid of the leftovers right away.

But I set my mind to improving my health, so I don’t let these things get in my way.

WHAT LEVEL OF SUPPORT DO YOU HAVE FROM PEOPLE AROUND YOU?

I’ve had a ton of support from my husband and family members. I cook dinner every night and my husband eats plant-based now too. He likes it!

HOW HAVE YOU CHANGED THROUGH THIS EXPERIENCE?

I was sedentary - I used to sit around and watch TV a lot more, because I didn’t have a lot of energy. I tried to workout, but it was hard  and I wasn’t motivated to do it on a regular basis.

Now, everything is physically easier. I have better stamina and have seen it improve a lot since I first started. I’m in a lot better shape now, so it takes me longer to get my pulse up. I’ve lost over 25 lbs and I have a lot more energy now. I go to the gym a few times a week and do Zumba too. I used to huff and puff and now I have so much energy. Exercising is not a chore anymore.

The mental fog has lifted.

HAS YOUR HEALTH IMPROVED?

At the start of Better, my blood pressure was 129/81, now it’s 110/71. My LDL (bad cholesterol) was 153, now it’s 75. And I’ve lost 25 lbs! Every time I go shopping to get new clothes that fit, I’m a smaller size.
